HHC vs THC: What Are the Differences Between These Two Similar Compounds?

Hexahydrocannabinol and Tetrahyrdocannabinol – two psychoactive compounds found in cannabis that are incredibly similar as far as chemical structure and effects; but also, quite different in many ways, such as how it metabolizes in the body, and legality. Let’s further explore the differences between HHC vs THC.

What is HHC?

Hexahydrocannabinols are another group of psychoactive cannabinoids that are very similar to tetrahydrocannabinols. HHC is basically a simplified version of Delta 9 THC. Both HHC and Delta-9 THC have very similar molecular structures but with HHC, all the double bonds have been broken and replaced with hydrogen (AKA hydrogenation). It was discovered during research in the 1960s and 70s in which the goal was to find the most basic cannabinoid-like substances that could still bind to CB receptors.

There is a biologically active naturally occurring (−)-hexahydrocannabinol, as well as its synthetic enantiomer (+)-hexahydrocannabinol. The natural HHC is known scientifically as 6aR,9R,10aR-Hexahydrocannabinol, and it’s a trace compound that can be extracted from cannabis pollen. The synthetic variety which goes by the chemical formula 9-Nor-9β-hydroxyhexahydrocannabinol, can be found in spice.

In addition to the natural and synthetic HHCs, a couple of more potent analogues and isomers that have been created (such as HHC-O, which is the acetate version of HHC, and HHC-P which is the carbon version), and the topic of creating chain lengths and combinations like HHC-V, HHC-B, and HHC-H is of growing relevance. These are the same chain length variations we see in all the different THCs.

HHC vs THC
Comparing HHC vs THC chemical structure

Most HHC products on the market are synthetic, but in this context, “synthetic” can mean one of two things. First, synthetic cannabinoids can be compounds that do not exist in nature and must be created in a lab, like THC-O. A synthetic can also be a cannabinoid that does exist in nature, but in such low amounts that it wouldn’t really make sense to extract it, as you would need a ridiculous amount of plant matter to do so. In such cases, it must be synthesized in a lab. This is very common with Delta 8 THC products.

We’re seeing a small influx of new, HHC-P products, hitting the store shelves, but it’s close to impossible to find any information about this cannabinoid that comes from a neutral, fact-based party rather than from the companies who are selling it. It’s likely because, the companies selling the compounds are also the ones who are creating them in the first place, and no one else really knows about these compounds or has had the opportunity to study them yet.

What is THC?

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis responsible for the “high” we all know and love. THC is secreted by the resin glands, or trichomes. There are three types of trichomes: bulbous, capitate-stalked, and capitate-sessile, and they are found all over the flowers.

THC acts similarly to the cannabinoid-type chemicals made naturally by the human body (endocannabinoids), which is why it can be useful in the treatment of so many different conditions. Cannabinoid receptors 1 and 2 (CB1 and CB2) can be found throughout body and they make up part of the larger endocannabinoid system. Collectively, these receptors and the compounds that interact with them contribute to many of our most important physical and psychological functions including learning and memory, emotional processing, sleep, temperature control, pain control, inflammatory and immune responses, and eating.

Because THC attaches to these receptors directly, whereas CBD interacts with other receptors that then engage the ECS, it’s believed that THC might be the most beneficial compound in the cannabis plant.

There are many different types of THC including natural ones such as delta 8 and 9, synthetic ones like Delta 10 and THC-O, and trace ones that include THC-P, THC-H, and THC-B. We also have THCA, which exists in the raw plant and is a precursor to all other tetrahydrocannabinols. And there is also hydroxy-11 THC, a metabolite formed by our bodies during the digestion of tetrahydrocannabinols (when we use edibles).

Drug Testing: HHC vs THC

THC, in all of its forms, does show up on drug tests. That’s because, contrary to popular belief, standard urine tests don’t screen for the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in cannabis, but rather, they detect the metabolites created by the human body when we are exposed to THC. This class of metabolites is known as THC-COOH. These metabolites are nonactive, so drug tests are only measuring exposure, NOT impairment. Marijuana impairment cannot be detected through any kind of test thus far.

hhc drug test

THC-COOH, or “carboxy THC” is the most common name for this metabolite. It’s the second THC-metabolite formed in our bodies, following hydroxy-THC, immediately after exposure. THC-COOH is lipid-soluble, meaning it’s stored in our fat cells making it detectable in our systems for much longer than other substances, those that are water soluble for example.

So, what about HHC? Short answer, it’s hard to say. Anecdotal evidence as well as numerous first-hand accounts I found online claim that it does NOT trigger a positive. However, I have not tested this myself, nor have I been able to find any official research or documentation on the matter.

That being said, there is also a strong possibility that even if HHC doesn’t make you pop on a test, your product could contain traces of other compounds that will, such as Delta 8 or Delta 9 THC. If you have anything important riding on your drug test, it’s best to abstain from all cannabis products to be on the safe side.

Legality

When it comes to the legality of both THC and HHC, it’s a little bit complicated. Delta 9 THC is largely illegal, federally and in most states. This is because it’s the most abundant psychoactive compound in marijuana, which is the legal classification for cannabis varieties containing more than 0.3% THC. However, when delta 9 THC is derived from hemp, it is considered legal, or at the very least, it falls into a legal grey area where many products containing it manage to slip under the radar.

This applies to HHC as well. Because it’s extracted from hemp or cannabis pollen, it falls under that legal loophole created by the 2018 Farm Bill. HHC is also one of the few compounds that is completely unregulated in Europe, and it seems to be an emerging market in certain countries, such as Spain and Germany.

A Few More Notes on HHC vs THC

One of the most common questions when it comes to HHC vs THC, is which one is stronger? Well, that’s not always a straightforward answer when it comes to cannabis compounds. Let’s start with the fact that everyone’s bodies are different, so the way cannabinoids affect them can vary greatly. HHC is still a lesser-known compound, so probably the majority of cannabis users prefer THC products. However, a growing number of consumers are showing interest in HHC, as well as blended products containing two or more different types of hexahydrocannabinols and tetrahydrocannabinols.

So, there you have it. As you can see, when it comes to HHC vs THC, the differences are mostly minor, aside from the possibility of HHC not showing up on a drug test, which cannot be said with 100% certainty anyway. Overall, they are built similar and have similar effects in the human body. To enjoy both, check out a few fun products below.

5 ways to be Discreet when Consuming Cannabis

The cannabis plant is adored by a large section of the world, and by many nations. Whilst it may not be legal in all of these is a different story, but there is no doubt that people enjoy it in every continent. However, there are some moments in life when enjoying weed and being high is not something you want everyone knowing about. In other words, you would rather be discreet.

In these moments, we at Cannadelics believe there are 5 steps to consider to help you along the way. Hiding the consumption of cannabis is not always easy, but it is certainly possible. If only we lived in a world where weed was legal everywhere and using it was acceptable by everyone at any time, meaning there was never a need to keep it on the downlow at all. But, unfortunately, the majority of us do not live in that world and, as a result, we need to take some precautions. Here are 5 ways to be discreet when consuming cannabis.

To stay current on everything important happening in the industry, as well as gain access to deals on cannabis flowers, vapes, edibles, and much more (various cannabinoids to choose from), make sure to subscribe to The Cannadelics Weekly Newsletter. Enjoy responsibly!

Discreet Cannabis

The world is changing its view on cannabis and slowly nations and states are beginning to turn their heads to the benefits of the substance. However, not long before now, we lived in a – basically – completely cannabis banned world. If we rewind to the 1800s and before, cannabis was a free and growing plant. It was being used for its hemp, as well as for its recreational purposes – in all continents. In fact, it wasn’t until the late 1800s that the mind of the world began to change. Napoleon banned his soldiers from using the substance, although according to reports the ban was not taken seriously.

Other nations followed suit, Asia, Europe and the Americas all began making cannabis illegal. It was suddenly seen as an uncontrollable commodity – unlike alcohol. Whilst it was legal, governments could not make money from it, and therefore it must be stopped. Even in India – a place where lots of cannabis grew and still goes – the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission of 1894-1895 did a report on cannabis. Their very honest review said:

“Viewing the subject generally, it may be added that the moderate use of these drugs is the rule, and that the excessive use is comparatively exceptional. The moderate use practically produces no ill effects. In all but the most exceptional cases, the injury from habitual moderate use is not appreciable.”

This was proof that the substance, when professionally reviewed, was hardly ever criticized. Nonetheless, cannabis was demonized for decades and, suddenly, it was a class B drug in the UK and a Schedule II in the US. However, as a naturally growing plant that has been part of many cultures for centuries, it continued to grow and continued to be used. It was just the case that certain people needed to be more discreet than others. Whether it’s smoking a joint in the French army with Napoleon round the corner or enjoying a vape before college – both require a certain level of skill. I wish we lived in a world where being discreet was unnecessary but we do so, therefore, here are 5 key tips to help you be low key with your cannabis consumption.

1 – Use a Cannabis Vaporizer

First things first, let’s consider how you’re actually consuming your cannabis. There is no doubt that smoking weed is by far the most obvious method available. The smell on your clothes, hands and body are very hard to hide, as well as the smell of the joint itself. Even just having dry buds in your possession can cause a mighty weed stench wherever you go. Therefore, using a cannabis vape instead will reduce this momentously.

There are two types of these vaporizers, one that uses cartridges and one that uses cannabis buds. The first is the most discreet, as the carts and the vapor created will basically leave no smell at all. However, it is not always easy to get your hands on THC cartridges, especially if you don’t live in the US. Even if you can, the chances are that these products will be far more expensive than just purchasing dry weed. Therefore, if you find it hard to access the carts, then instead you can use a dry herb vaporizer, which heats up the buds in an oven.

Whilst the weed itself still has a slight scent, the low temperature at which it heats the cannabis will ensure a far reduced smell than smoking. It’s also important to note that vapes are discreet in their design. With the many varied designs of vaporizers, it is basically impossible to know what is a cannabis vape and what is an e-cig. Therefore, even the device itself will help you and your high slip into the shadows of normality. A cannabis vape will not bring attention to you in the same way that smoking a joint will.

2 – Enjoy Edibles or Tinctures

Another discreet way of consuming cannabis is to use edibles or tinctures. One step even further towards being completely hidden from sight – a cannabis ninja – is not inhaling it at all. Instead, enjoy drinking or eating it. When you inhale cannabis, the high comes quickly but does not stay for a great deal of time. Therefore, it requires you to continually need to top up your high, which leaves you at risk of being found out. However, if you digest cannabis, the high takes longer to come but breaks down slower – leaving you with a long and endured high. CCSA writes:

“Cannabis smoke or vapor delivers THC, the chemical that gets you high, into your lungs where it passes directly into your bloodstream and then your brain. Edible cannabis travels first to your stomach then to your liver before getting into your bloodstream and brain.”

The first process is quicker and lasts less time, the second is slower but lasts more time. So you can bake some cannabis goodies and allow them to take hold of you over the day, without the need to inhale anything. Or, you can even find yourself a cannabis tincture and place the drops in your tongue or drink before leaving the house. This option of consumption is probably the most discreet, but not everyone prefers this kind of high. Many people still prefer to smoke cannabis or vape it.

3 – Hide the Smell

If you are a die hard cannabis smoker and do not want to change then, you know what, fair enough. There is definitely something special about rolling and smoking a joint that nothing really can compare to. However, the smell left is immense and that is a serious issue if you want to be discreet. But there are some methods of reducing these scents. First of all, always have a packet of gum at hand – this is a crucial tool for any smoker.

Then you should consider where you are smoking, as you do not want to leave the place you’re in with a large cloud of cannabis. The more ventilation, the better. If you’re outside then that is ideal but, if not, then try a bathroom or somewhere with less people and large open windows. The more air that is passing through, the less smoke that will attach itself to your clothes, body and your surroundings.

Then you have your body and garments to deal with. Always wash your hands after smoking, the fingers will always keep a lot of the scent on them. Then, try using deodorant or, even better, have a change of clothes. Cannabis-smelling clothes are always the biggest giveaway and it’s also the hardest thing to avoid when smoking weed. Grove writes:

“Inside every puff of cigarette smoke is a cloud of carcinogenic residue, things like tar, oil, ash, and thousands of chemicals from the cigarette. This smokey molecular concoction is very sticky, and its particles tightly adhere to everything from clothes and hair to upholstery and carpeting”

Ultimately, you’re always running a risk when choosing to smoke cannabis – it is by far the most obvious method of consuming weed. But, if you really have to, then just try to go somewhere as ventilated as possible and bring a spare pair of clothes. This will help but may not eradicate the problem entirely.

4 – When

The next way to be discreet when consuming cannabis is to consider when you do it. The set and setting is a primary part of enjoying any psychedelic substance, as it is your surroundings and mindset that does often affect your high. Usually this is in regards to harder hallucinogen drugs, but it also has its place in the world of cannabis too.

If you’re consuming weed discreetly, it will most likely add unwanted anxiety to the effects. Ideally, choose a day when you are free and have time to enjoy the experience. This way, you won’t need to worry about being discreet at all. However, if that is not possible, then try and be selective with when you do it. Try consuming cannabis at least an hour before any errand you have to run – be it a class or a dinner with your parents. Or, if you can, wait until after the event itself.

5 – Relax

The signs of being high, at least in stoner films, includes: big red eyes, a cheeky grin and an inability to move. Now, whilst these are enhanced for comedic effect, they also have an element of truth. If you’re concerned about people noticing your eyes, try using drops – the more lubricated, the less obvious. It is sometimes better that people think you were crying than enjoying some Mary Jane. Another thing you can do to stop any anxiety or a cheeky grin is to simply relax.

Try meditating before you leave the house, taking deep breaths as you walk, or simply remind yourself how – in the end – none of this really matters. Everyone has habits they would rather be discreet about, you’re not the only one. A sense of relaxation will make you ease into the high, and feel more ‘normal’. If you feel like you’re too high to hide it, then maybe try drinking a sugary drink or a coffee. Any sort of stimulant will assist you in controlling the effects of the weed.

Conclusion

Ideally, you can enjoy your cannabis without needing to be discreet at all. Unless you get a kick out of being a weed ninja, this will certainly improve your experience. However, the time will eventually come when the world will require you to hide your high. When that time comes, hopefully these 5 methods of being discreet will help you out.

What Does CBD Look Like? See Whats Inside Your CBD Oil

CBD hemp flower is a remarkable product. You get many cannabis plant health benefits without the psychoactive effects of “marijuana.”

But while we’ve spent a lot of time discussing CBD’s potential therapeutic applications, CBD’s physical appearance somewhat lacks representation. Odds are you’ve purchased CBD products like CBD oil or vape carts and noticed the concentrates’ colors.

What – if anything – do they mean? Can color tell us about the product’s chemical composition? Should we buy CBD based on its color, or does the old saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” still apply?

As in most cases with CBD, the answers aren’t simple.

Hemp vs. Marijuana

Let’s clear the air about this before diving in. You may often read that a vendor sells CBD from “hemp flowers, not marijuana or cannabis.”

However, “hemp” and THC-rich “marijuana” aren’t real species. They’re legal terms based on cultivars (“strains”) of the cannabis sativa plant (a.k.a. “cannabis sativa L.”).

Many factors determine the cannabinoid content of a cannabis plant, such as lineage, nutrients, growing methods, and climate.

Ultimately, law enforcement defines federally legal “hemp” as any cannabis plant cultivar with less than 0.3% THC. Anything exceeding that threshold is “marijuana.” Some harvests may accidentally contain more than the legal limit by a small margin. Growers refer to this as “hot hemp.”

In short, both hemp and marijuana come from the same roots, but centuries of cross-cultivation allowed us to fine-tune each cultivar for a specific use.

This hemp vs. marijuana myth doesn’t affect the quality of your CBD, but it’s important to understand the product as much as possible.

Hemp CBD vs. Marijuana CBD

A moment ago, we established that both “hemp” and “marijuana” refer to the same plant species. It’s, therefore, safe to say that CBD weed and CBD hemp flower provide the same cannabinoid – which is exactly the case.

Whether you get your CBD flower from marijuana plants or hemp plants, the product is identical down to the molecular level (more on that later).

However, CBD oils and other CBD products from higher-THC “marijuana” likely exceed the maximum limit. Consequently, only certain states provide access to regulated CBD cannabis.

Fortunately, it’s easy to access quality CBD from federally legal hemp.

Hemp cultivars have unique physical attributes from many marijuana variants. Specifically, hemp is tall with sparse leaves, indicative of the sativa lineage (often mistakenly associated with specific recreational or medical effects).

Hemp’s appearance is in stark contrast to the short, bushy, indicas (also incorrectly believed to have exclusive effects).

Does CBD from Hemp and Marijuana Look the Same?

Yes, CBD from hemp and marijuana flower look the same. They share an identical source and therefore lead to an identical product. CBD oils from higher-THC cannabis or hemp are indistinguishable from each other.

What Does CBD Look Like?

CBD’s physical appearance isn’t based on a single characteristic. There are many ways to identify specific CBD products based on their appearance.

But keep in mind: same plant, same features.

What Does CBD Flower Look Like?

CBD flower is generally indistinguishable from its intoxicating cousin. We occasionally noticed people pointing out that CBD flower is often darker, such as Pennywise, Cannatonic, or Nebula II CBD.

However, dark green cannabis isn’t exactly rare, again making it impossible to tell CBD hemp flower from marijuana plant flower.

What Does Crude CBD Look Like?

It’s hard to describe what crude CBD looks like on paper, so we decided to show you below.

This picture is taken from Eden Labs.

Admittedly, it’s not very appetizing, but let’s give it some context. While not necessarily a gold star for presentation, this is what high-quality CBD looks like.

This crude CBD underwent CO2 extraction to filter out cannabis plant matter and collect valuable compounds. CO2 stands apart for its solventless technique. Unlike butane or alcohol extraction – which leave behind trace toxins – CO2 filters itself out and presents no known risk to human health when used in this form.

What Does Winterized CBD Look Like?

Once you dig deep into the CBD subcategories, some subtle differences might appear. Specifically, winterized CBD is darker than most conventional CBD products.

Winterized CBD looks like molasses or manuka honey – a dark, almost coffee-brown, color. It’s also more viscous than normal CBD oil, giving it a thick, syrupy consistency.

What Does CBD Distillate Look Like?

CBD distillate looks like light maple syrup or regular honey, with a comparable density.

Don’t be fooled by its golden hue. This doesn’t mean the product contains other compounds beyond CBD. Consequently, you won’t experience the combined benefits of the “entourage effect.”

Instead, distillates are designed to contain higher concentrations of CBD with little else. When vaped, this creates a strong initial effect with a short duration. Through ingestion, your body only experiences the benefits of CBD, forfeiting some critical therapeutic components.

Full Spectrum

Full-spectrum CBD contains its host plant’s entire cannabinoid and terpene profile, including THC. Although this offers the most benefits due to the synergistic effects of whole plant extracts, THC content could concern some people.

Broad Spectrum

Broad-spectrum CBD is a happy medium between full-spectrum CBD oil concentrated distillates.

Carefully processed to remove all traces of THC, broad-spectrum CBD products still boast the same cannabinoid and terpene profiles of their host plants. Broad-spectrum CBD bridges a gap that once confined customers to two extreme options.

What Does CBD Isolate Look Like?

CBD isolate has a crystalline appearance and comes as a clear white powder. This variety contains up to 99% CBD with no additional compounds.

Flavorless and water-soluble, this product is versatile and can be used in edibles without affecting their taste.

What Does a CBD Molecule Look Like?

We’ve covered everything visible with the naked eye, so let’s dig deep and look under the hood. What if we took a powerful microscope and saw CBD at the molecular level?

Unfortunately, we don’t have that kind of equipment lying around, so the following picture will have to do:

Looks boring, but there are some interesting curveballs. The exact molecular formula for CBD is C21H30O2. In other words, the composition is as follows:

  • 21 carbon atoms
  • 30 hydrogen atoms
  • 2 oxygen atoms

This is important because it proves nature has a sense of irony. The non-intoxicating CBD has the exact chemical composition as THC (among a few others). A structural difference is why THC has psychoactive effects while its counterpart is benign.

It’s a bit funny that, at the molecular level, we’re consuming the same elements with drastically different results.

Colorado Botanicals Proprietary Purification Process

Despite being a clean extraction method, CO2 isn’t flawless. A major problem manufacturers face is that the process destroys the majority of plant terpenes. Consequently, companies infuse their final products with botanical terpenes.

Colorado Botanicals values the importance of a true whole-plant extract. We circumvent the CO2 challenge through our proprietary purification process. Unlike the distillation methods used by other vendors, Colorado Botanicals’ “separation technology” relies on low-temperature purification, preventing terpene and flavonoid destruction.

Their unique process generates an equally unique raw extract, with a dark red color.

Can Different Extraction Methods Make CBD Look Different?

Yes. Different extraction methods can make CBD look different. The color of your CBD tells you a lot about how the product was manufactured.

Is It Better for CBD To Look Like Gold or Darker?

First, let’s establish that CBD colors flow on a spectrum. Even the same vendor can generate a different-colored CBD oil from one batch to another.

The general consensus is that gold CBD is the best option. However, it’s imprecise at best to judge the concentration, purity, or quality of cannabis oil based on color alone. Only third-party tests can verify the claims made on each product’s label.

Conclusion: What Does CBD Look Like?

Because it’s from the same species, CBD flower looks like all cannabis flower. Placed side-by-side, “hemp” and “marijuana” CBD have no distinguishing features that set them apart.

The same applies to the plant’s physical appearance, although it follows sativa strain’s size and density.

Extracts can look many different ways. Isolates and distillates with high levels of CBD look clear and light gold respectively. Meanwhile, full and broad-spectrum CBD products can range in color from dark to dark gold.

Winterized CBD is more viscous and has a distinct, coffee-like color and syrupy consistency.

All of these attributes are handy for understanding production quality, but they’re not written in stone. Sometimes color isn’t an accurate way to judge a product.

The only way to guarantee a safe, high-quality purchase is to research the company and examine their third-party lab tests.

What is Delta 9 THC?

Delta 9 THC is basically the essence of cannabis. It’s the reason this plant has been popular in various cultures for hundreds of years. But what exactly is this compound? What are the effects and benefits of using it, and how can you best utilize it? Scroll down to learn more.

To stay current on everything important happening in the industry, as well as gain access to deals on cannabis flowers, vapes, edibles, and much more (various cannabinoids to choose from), make sure to subscribe to The Cannadelics Weekly Newsletter. Enjoy responsibly!

What is Delta 9 THC?

When people think of “THC”, Delta 9 is what they’re thinking of. Delta 9 Tetrahydrocannabinol is the main psychoactive compound in the cannabis plant. THC was first discovered and isolated in 1964 by Israeli chemist and professor, Raphael Mechoulam. For decades, Delta 9 has been at the heart of prohibition efforts because lawmakers were too intently focused on its mind-altering properties while completely dismissing all its many possible uses in the medical and wellness sectors.

Delta 9 THC can be marijuana-derived or hemp-derived, meaning it can be extracted from both types of cannabis. That said, since there is so little THC at all in hemp, that means it will take considerably more plant matter to get a usable about of delta 9 THC out of it, so it’s not very practical, although it is technically the “legal” option since marijuana-derived Delta 9 is still prohibited.

Now, let’s talk about what delta 9 actually is, versus the many other cannabinoids found in cannabis. In chemistry, “delta” refers to the double bond on a molecule’s carbon chain. In the case of THC, we have a few different variations. With delta 9 THC, the double bond is on the 9th carbon chain, whereas other delta THCs like 8 and 10 have the double bond on the 8th and 10th carbon chains (respectively).

In comparison to cannabidiol, both THC and CBD are structurally similar but very different in terms of effects. While THC is the most abundant mind-altering cannabinoid found in cannabis, CBD is the most abundant non-psychoactive one. Both are known to have a huge range of medicinal benefits, and despite CBD having been the main focus of scientific research for many years, lately there has been growing evidence that THC has more uses than previously thought.

Medical benefits of Delta 9 THC

THC has been used therapeutically for centuries and it can treat a diverse range of conditions including pain, glaucoma, nausea, and depression. This particular study, conducted by Psychology Associate Professor Jacob Miguel Vigil and Economics Assistant Professor Sarah See Stith from the University of New Mexico, compared come common ailments treated by cannabis.

They looked specifically at which cannabinoid offered more effective symptom relief, THC or CBD. The research was published on Tuesday, February 26, in the Scientific Reports Journal. According to their research, “THC exhibited the strongest correlation with therapeutic relief, compared to the more socially acceptable chemical found in cannabis, CBD (cannabidiol).”

They measured 27 different symptom categories ranging from depression to seizure activity and found that dried cannabis flower high in THC provided immediate symptom relief in most of the cases. Overall, smokable high-THC flower was the most commonly used product and showed greater symptom improvement than other methods of consumption. They gathered this information through the Releaf App, the largest database tracking medical cannabis use in the country.

“Despite the conventional wisdom, both in the popular press and much of the scientific community that only CBD has medical benefits while THC merely makes one high, our results suggest that THC may be more important than CBD in generating therapeutic benefits. In our study, CBD appears to have little effect at all, while THC generates measurable improvements in symptom relief. These findings justify the immediate de-scheduling of all types of cannabis, in addition to hemp, so that cannabis with THC can be more widely accessible for pharmaceutical use by the general public,” said Vigil.

Numerous other studies over the years, as well as plenty of anecdotal evidence, have shown that using delta-9 THC may have therapeutic benefits for many conditions, including nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, seizure disorders, chronic pain, spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) and sleep disorders in people with other chronic conditions.

The risks of consuming THC on a regular basis are quite low, especially in contrast to other common recreational drugs, and even pharmaceuticals. All in all, weed is very safe, but some people don’t enjoy the high from it and may experience anxiety. Other negative side effects have been noted by the FDA and CDC, such as depression, risk of paranoia and schizophrenia, memory/cognitive issues, and more; but these have all been hotly debated over the years.

How to tone down your high

Let’s start with basics… how does one get too high from THC? Some obvious reasons include the user being novice, especially if they’re young teenagers or elderly users. That also goes for first-time users, although many people claim to not feel much of high their first time. Getting too high also often depends on the circumstances or situation where cannabis is used, if you’re in an uncomfortable scenario and feeling anxious already, cannabis might add to that and make you feel worse. Other factors worth mentioning are body weight, existing tolerance to cannabis products, underlying health conditions, and whether you ate or slept recently.

Cannabis edibles are another big culprit here, and that is because of how THC is digested by the body. Additionally, when we digest any type of delta THC, our bodies convert it to 11-hydroxy THC, which is said to be quite a bit stronger than Delta 9. These days, there are also highly potent cannabis concentrates, extracts, and tinctures that can get you 15 or even 30 times higher than smoking conventional cannabis. It’s also harder to dose accurately when taking edibles, as opposed to smoking or vaping.

Concentrates are also worth noting here. With products contain upwards of 80% THC, even a veteran cannabis user can feel some extra intoxicating effects from “dabbing”, or otherwise using concentrates, so that’s also something to bear in mind as well.

So, now that you are aware of how it happens, let’s talk about what to do if you encounter this problem. The first thing to keep in mind is – stay calm, and don’t panic – the high wears off fast and you’ll be perfectly fine very soon (as a matter of fact, you’re perfectly fine right now, just a little too stoned). Sit down and relax in a cool, comfortable area, focus on your breathing and just chill.

The next thing you should do is grab some water and a snack. It’s always good to stay hydrated, which will inevitably make you feel better anyway, and conventional wisdom states that food makes your high go away. You could also try going for a walk, jumping in the shower, or even taking a short nap.

The Pros and Cons of Vaping Cannabis

It took a bit of getting used in the beginning, but vaping has exploded in recent years and as far as we can tell, these products are here to stay and only improving in terms of variety and functionality. Even so, they still remain a bit of a mystery to many consumers who may not understand exactly how they work or what vape products have to offer them. So, here is everything you need to know about the pros and cons of vaping cannabis.

To stay current on everything important happening in the industry, as well as gain access to deals on cannabis flowers, vapes, edibles, and much more (various cannabinoids to choose from), make sure to subscribe to The Cannadelics Weekly Newsletter. Enjoy responsibly!

What is Vaping?

Vaping has become incredibly popular over the last couple decades and as such, most people are relatively familiar with the concept. In case you are not, vaping is the use of an electronic device to heat up a liquid or raw plant material until it produces a vapor that can be inhaled.

Vaping can be done with nicotine vape juice, cannabis extracts, flower, and tobacco. When vaping actual weed or tobacco, the vaporizer will heat up the plant matter just enough to make that vapor by using heating methods known as convection and conduction. Since it does not actually burn or combust the product, this makes for a much cleaner and safer experience than smoking.

Although interest in vaping technology has really blossomed lately, the idea behind it is much older than most people realize. One of first patents for an electronic device to vaporize plant compounds was filed in 1927 by Joseph Robinson. The device was never commercialized, as a matter of fact, no one knows if Robinson ever manufactured a prototype. But the idea was there.

Many more vape designs emerged throughout the 20th century. A few of the more popular ones include the “Shake and Vape”, a bulbous glass pipe meant for vaping weed that was invented by Cherokee medicine man Eagle Bill, and the infamous Volcano Vaporize released in 2000 by Storz and Bickel, which became really popular among millennial stoners. Everyone at least knew someone with a volcano back in the day, and the still remain one of the iconic vape devices on the market.

A few years later, in 2002, Chinese entrepreneur Hon Lik invented the e-cigarette. Met with much skepticism in the beginning, it’s now a stable item in U.S. smoke shops, head shops, and dispensaries. Last year, the cannabis vape cart and disposables sector generated over $2 billion, and it has only continued to grow throughout 2022.

Conduction vs Convection

Above I mentioned convection and conduction, which are two possible heating methods used in vapes. It’s relatively simple, but I wanted to go over each process in a bit more detail. In convection heating, the substance makes direct contact with the heat source. Think of it like boiling water – you apply heat to the pot which then boils the water from the bottom up. In a standard vape, a ceramic or metal coil is the source that heats up the chamber, and then the chamber heats and vaporizes the product.

Convection vapes are the opposite, they work by indirectly heating flower or concentrate. Similar to an oven, the air inside the chamber is heated and then a vapor is produced by the product. Convection vapes heat the product as you draw, and because the heating element is separate from the bowl or chamber, the heat is applied more evenly and there is less risk of burning the product.

Although convection heating sounds like the superior of the two, most vaporizers on the market use conduction heating. It does often take longer to heat the product with convection vapes, so it’ll be slower and possibly less convenient and discreet. But that seems to be the only drawback to using convection vapes.

Is Vaping Actually Safer Than Smoking?

Vaping is touted as the safer alternative to smoking, but how safe is it really? Naturally, a great deal of anecdotal evidence suggests that it is considerably easier on the lungs. There is certainly a lack of controlled, randomized testing comparing the effects of smoking weed products versus vaping them (or vaping versus smoking in general); but there can be many reasons for that, ranging from the fact that cannabis is still federally illegal, to the knowledge we have about big tobacco and how much money they give to the government through lobbying and political donations.

That said, despite vaping likely being safer than smoking, it’s not without risks of its own. Let’s face it, ideally, you should not be inhaling anything into your lungs aside from oxygen. But we do, so our goal is to do it as safely as possible. Some studies, like this one from the University of Michigan, actually argue that vaping is even more dangerous than smoking, but it’s hard to see how that could be true.

Regardless, there are some things to consider when vaping that could possibly make it even less safe, such as the addition of vitamin E acetate or other fillers in unregulated vape products. Also, the way you take hits could make a difference as well. I’m a heavy weed smoker and I’ve noticed that sometimes when I hit my vape pens, I draw way harder than I should (as if I’m hitting a blunt or joint) which leads to way more coughing than I experience when smoking – but that’s more of a user-error type of situation.

When it comes to tobacco, the majority of studies found that e-cigs are safer but not free of risk. “E-cigarettes heat nicotine (extracted from tobacco), flavorings and other chemicals to create an aerosol that you inhale. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic,” says Michael Joseph Blaha, M.D., M.P.H. “While we don’t know exactly what chemicals are in e-cigarettes,” there’s almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes.”

The Pros and Cons of Vaping Cannabis

Let’s first take a look at the negatives and positives when it comes to vaping real cannabis flower using a dry herb vaporizer.

PROS

  • You get the benefits of vaping with the classic feel and flavor of using real flower.
  • Because of the controlled low temperatures, more cannabinoids and terpenes are activated before they are burned off, leading to much more potent flavors and better terp profiles.
  • There is less smell to worry about. Many vape devices are discreet and portable, and you don’t have to worry about that super pungent aroma of weed smoke.

CONS

  • One of the biggest issues people have with switching to a dry herb vape is the initial cost of doing it. A good quality device could be upwards of a couple hundred dollars.
  • Weaker effects compared to smoking (although this depends on who you ask. I personally prefer the effects of smoking, but some small-scale studies such as this one conducted by Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center’s behavioral pharmacology research unit in 2018, claim that vaping, in fact, produces a stronger high).

Next, let’s check out some of the pros and cons of using vape carts and disposables.

PROS

  • Convenience and discretion are probably the biggest perks to the introduction of carts and disposables. Now, we can get high almost anywhere and anytime. Carts are my go-to for getting stoned when I’m out and about in Indiana (my current state of residence), where cannabis is still illegal and it’s much sketchier to use in public.
  • Carts and disposables are very cost-effective. In several of the more established markets (like California), even decent quality live resin carts and dispos are selling for around $20 per gram.
  • Variety, variety, and more variety. With carts and disposable vapes, you have so many different strains and flavors to choose from.

CONS

  • Some vape products contain heavy metals and other dangerous additives and containments. And not just in the extract, but the metal components in the carts themselves have been called into question lately as well.
  • The high is said to be less intense than with smoking weed or even using dry herb vapes, but again, it depends on what you’re vaping and many other situational factors.
  • Not a health problem but an environmental one, and that’s the sheer amount of waste produced by these products. Because both carts and disposables are meant to be thrown out after you finish using them, this has led to an increase in vape litter on our streets.

Final Thoughts

Vaping is one of the fastest-growing cannabis industry trends; not only because it’s believed to be safer than smoking, but because it offers a level of discretion and variety you just can’t get with flowers. That’s not to say that vapes are the perfect alternative to smoking, because that’s not the case for everyone, but they can certainly be a great addition to your regular inventory of pot products.

My Journey Through Nepal: Exploring Local Drug Laws

Within the digital nomad lifestyle, sometimes it requires you to try something new and go places you thought you’d never go. Well, as I write this, I’m sitting in a small hostel restaurant in the quiet cobbled streets of Bandipur, Nepal. It’s a tiny village on the road to the Himalayas, with a population of around 5000. I plan to stay in this country for over a month.

Why did I come? Well, there are many reasons why people travel: to experience new cultures, to breathe new life into their current one, to try the insanely tasty food and, in my case, to learn more about how Asian countries deal with drugs. Whilst many nations in the continent have made cannabis and other recreational substances illegal, there’s also another culture that exists. One where drugs are used for spiritual and religious purposes, as well as for rural tasks. I plan to learn more as I go, but here is what I know so far about drug laws in Nepal. Namaste.

To stay current on everything important happening in the industry, as well as gain access to deals on cannabis flowers, vapes, edibles, and much more (various cannabinoids to choose from), make sure to subscribe to The Cannadelics Weekly Newsletter. Enjoy responsibly!

Laws vs Culture

In every country there are two realities that exist, oddly, side by side. If you were a lawyer, you might label this dichotomy as: de facto and de jure. De facto means the actual reality that takes place on the streets, regardless of what the law might permit. De jure signifies what a nation allows by law, by the book. You’d assume, with police enforcement, that these two things would be the same. However, as many people will be aware, what is written in the law, does not always take place in reality. In fact, usually, it’s quite the opposite.

During the civil rights movement of the 60s in the US, it took a long time before the legal change promoting African American rights turned into anything genuine on the streets. With racism and inequality still very much existing, despite the Civil Rights Act of 1964. A change in law does not directly cause a change in people. At Least not instantly. In a different sense, the ‘war on drugs’ has also failed. Nixon’s decision to demonize those using drugs, as well as the substances themselves, has not and never will stop production and use. The UN has recently berated this consensus, and called for an end to it, stating that the war on drugs…

“Undermines health and social wellbeing and wastes public resources while failing to eradicate the demand for illegal drugs and the illegal drug market. Worse, this “war” has engendered narco-economies at the local, national and regional levels in several instances to the detriment of national development. Such policies have far-reaching negative implications for the widest range of human rights”

Laws – for good or for worse – do not always directly influence the real world. In the world of drugs, this almost never happens, unless enforced by a dictatorship. Although, even then, Hitler was supposedly a cocaine abuser. Consider, for a second, the cannabis laws within the UK. Whilst the substance is illegal and classed as a type B drug (the second most extreme), there are still 1.4 million cannabis users within the UK. Two realities exist side by side. De jure vs de facto. Laws vs culture. This is what is also being confirmed to me as I travel through Nepal. Whilst many drugs are still illegal here, it doesn’t stop them being an important part of society.

Nepal

Nepal is a landlocked country that is situated between the two huge looming nations of China and India. With a population of 30 million, it is slightly bigger than the state of Arkansas or the European country of Portugal. In fact, it is the 25th smallest nation in Asia. Most of Nepal finds itself in the Himalayan mountain ranges, home to, of course, Mount Everest. This beautiful land of mountains, jungles and busy cities is where I will be residing for the next month of my travels. Nepal is believed to have existed back in the ancient times of the 30th Century BC. Whilst India experienced the pointless imperial rule of the UK, Nepal remained unscathed. Record Nepal writes:

“There was little fear of British military intervention in Nepal from the moment the British acquired its newly conquered territories of Kumaon, Garhwal and parts of Sikkim after the Anglo-Gorkha war; the difficulties of a military expedition in the hills of Nepal were clear to the British.”

It is nice, for a change, to visit a country where the United Kingdom hasn’t laid its filthy colonial hands. Nepal is a spiritual nation, with some incredible food and beautiful landscapes. But as I enjoy the fusion of Chinese-Indian food, thukpa and masala, I can’t help but wonder where drugs sit in the culture of this place.

Drug Laws in Nepal

During my first day in Kathmandu, the Nepalese capital, I wandered the tourist streets of Thamel and was probably asked about 50 times whether I wanted to buy hashish or psychedelics. The hash I was expecting, but LSD and magic mushrooms l was not. However, I was also aware that this was a tourist area, and perhaps these dealers were just catering to their Western, drug-loving visitors. Let’s take a look at the drug laws in Nepal, maybe this will help us understand more.

Anyone who is found purchasing, selling or consuming cannabis or hash in Nepal will be subject to a prison sentence and fine. The length and total fee will depend on the amount of this substance in question. For example, up to 50 grams can result in 3 months in prison, with a 3000 NRS fine. This is around 25 dollars. However, if you’re found with 10kg or over, this can result in a 2-10 year prison term, with a 100,000 NRS fine. This is around 800 dollars. It is interesting that, according to Nepalese law, whatever amount of cannabis or hash you are involved in, it will supposedly lead to a prison sentence. This seems slightly harsh and unlikely to me. As written in the Narcotics Drug Control Act of 1976, much is the same with any other recreational substance:

“Anyone who consumes opium, coca or any other narcotic drugs made therefrom shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of up to one year or with a fine of up to Rs 10,000… Anyone who consumes any natural or synthetic narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances and their salt and other substances… shall be punished with imprisonment for a term up to two months and with a fine up to Rs 2,000 or both.”

However, whilst the laws on drugs are strict and have been for some time, there is an inbuilt societal connection to certain substances which cannot be changed. Plus, the mountainous and diverse wildlife that Nepal has, makes it hard to limit the type of natural drugs that grow – such as cannabis or hash.

Drug Culture in Nepal

Hashish, or charas, has grown naturally in Nepal for centuries, some believe it grew in prehistoric times. In fact, it is sometimes considered that the feet of the Himalayas is where cannabis first derived. Could it be that Nepal grew the first ever joint? Nonetheless, the substance does grow there naturally in the wilderness and isn’t stopped by the government. Himalayan Trekkers writes that whilst it is illegal to cultivate, possess or consume cannabis…

“It is said that the wild-grown hashish in the mountains of Nepal is the best among the hashish found in the world… Nepal was known to be heaven for Marijuana lovers in the late 60s and early 70s as marijuana, hashish… were legal before that period. The government of Nepal illegalized the use of Cannabis in 1973 AD because people started migrating to Nepal because of the legal production and trade of Marijuana. “

It is true, before the cannabis ban, Nepal was surely on the hippie trail hotspot list. Plus the substance is also a part of religious and spiritual celebrations. 80% of the Nepalese population follows Hinduism and the pujari and sadhus of this religion have an unofficial exemption from the cannabis ban. It is respected that they use cannabis to help their meditation, which is them imitating Shiva. During Maha Shivaratri – the great night of Shiva – sadhus come together, as well as many others, to smoke hashish in pipes. You can witness this occurrence in temples around Nepal, including Kathmandu.

Final Thoughts

In Kathmandu the smell of hash was commonly in the air, with holy men holding some questionable pipes. However, as I go further into the mountains and closer to the Himalayas, I expect this type of sight to increase. I’m still waiting to try some myself but I’m certain I will. With the religious connection It seems inevitable that Nepal will one day legalize cannabis, but perhaps also it’s not for the best. The reason they banned it in the first place was to stop drug tourism – I acknowledge the irony of this. Nonetheless, since 2020, there have been many politicians in Nepal who have been advocating a lift of the ban. Perhaps only time will tell.
